Hi, I’m Natalie Martin, an Australian watercolour artist, based on Wadawarrung country (Surf Coast, Victoria).

The fluidity and subtlety of watercolour is only enhanced through working with layers, you can create a beautiful luminosity. This is quite unique to watercolour and one of the main reasons I love this medium so much.

This new intermediate course is my third online course, following on from Welcome to Watercolour and the Magic of Colour Mixing.

In it, we’ll dig into basic and more advanced layering techniques, you’ll spend time experimenting with ways to layer pigment, and learn how to create different effects (as long as you can muster the patience to let things dry properly as you go!) You’ll gain greater insight into my practice, as we explore how to create artworks with greater complexity, detail and interest. We also take time to delve into common errors and equipment care.

This course is the perfect next step once you’ve mastered the basics. Layering work brings watercolour to its greatest potential, and I can’t wait to see how you continue to develop your practice and build confidence in painting with this magical medium.

Natalie Martin is an artist based on the Surf Coast, Victoria. She likes to get her hands dirty and bring a little joy (and colour!) to the every day.

Natalie works in vibrant watercolour. She’s particularly fond of native Australian flora and the landscape it’s found. She’s drawn to blooms in season and that seasonal swing throughout the year provides a beautiful rhythm and constant flow of inspiration. She feels a deep connection to being outdoors and observing and learning from nature. With her studio based on the Surf Coast in Victoria, there’s an endless source of inspiration within reach.

Natalie fell in love with watercolour early on and over the years she has exhibited her work, produced a collection of limited edition prints, developed a line of environmentally friendly stationery, experimented with printing on fabrics and also begun teaching workshops in person as well as online.

Is this course suitable for kids?
Yes! This course ‘Lessons in Layering with Watercolour’ although not created specifically for kids is young person friendly, I suggest from ages 10 and up. 'Welcome to Watercolour' my beginners course is great for the whole family, 8+ years. My other intermediate course ‘The Magic of Colour Mixing’ has a bit more technical content in it, so I would suggest from ages 10 and up also. Even better, sit down with your kids and do it together!
What materials will I need to do the course?
I put an emphasis on the painting over the materials, expensive art materials tend to be a hindrance to the experience. If you have a set of watercolours already, use those! You don’t need to dash out and buy a whole lot of new supplies to match what you see in the course. What you’ll need: Watercolour paints Brush or two Watercolour Paper Pencil and Eraser Paper towel A couple of Water Jars Something to use as a palette for mixing (palette, large plate or tile) Scrap paper (optional) I have a painting kit available in my online store that provide you with most of the materials you need, https://nataliemartin.com.au/collections/painting-kits Good lighting helps too, natural light is best if you can manage it, a good workspace as well as a pinch of creative courage!
